[ My Review ]
This is Why We Lied by Karin Slaughter is #12 in The Will Trent Series and is described as a ‘stunning new 2024 crime mystery suspense thriller’. Karin Slaughter has established herself as one of the most popular authors in the world, and with good reason. Her novels are very authentic, packed with characters that leap off the pages and incredible visuals that immerse you right into her books. Will Trent and Sara Linton are household names to many as readers have become invested in how their work-life and personal relationship have developed over the series.
In This is Why We Lied Will and Sara embark on their honeymoon to McAlpine Lodge, a family-run, isolated resort in the mountains. Most guests hike to the resort, loving the inaccessibility and the real sense of escape that the location offers. Will organised this vacation in the hope that Sara will enjoy the peace and tranquillity, as it is a place that holds memories for him.
Within hours of their arrival it becomes very clear that all is not as it seems at McAlpine Lodge. There is an undercurrent of darkness bleeding deep into the seams of this idyllic place but on a superficial level, for the duration of the guests stay, the McAlpine family puts on a show of graciousness and comradery. But all that changes the night that the body of Mercy McAlpine is discovered by Will and Sara. following an obviously brutal attack. Mercy McAlpine has been managing the resort following a catastrophic accident that left her father in a wheelchair. She had made significant changes that had brought in more cash for the family but Mercy knew that there were buried secrets and earlier that evening she had threatened to reveal all. With plenty of motive but no obvious evidence, Will and Sara embark on an investigation, turning their idyllic honeymoon into a murky and deeply unsettling tale.
Karin Slaughter is a master storyteller, a leader in her field and with due praise. Evil lurks in the mountains and the McAlpine family’s hidden secrets are slowly trickled out revealing a nefarious story that will leave every reader unsettled and incensed. This is Why We Lied is a dark and complex story with reveals that are deplorable and leave your skin crawling. It’s claustrophobic with that ominous sense of dread palpable from quite early on. The desolation of the setting, the deplorable actions of many of the characters, the threatening sense of danger and fear overhanging every sentence all add up to another corker of a crime fiction novel, a brilliantly plotted thriller that is sure to be enjoyed by all Karin Slaughter fans, both new and old.
