[ My Review ]
Find You First by Linwood Barclay was just published, February 4th, with HQ Stories and is described as an ‘electrifying new thriller’ from the #1 Sunday Times bestseller. With a premise that intrigued me, I dived into this action-packed novel last weekend, one in which Linwood Barclay unleashes his imagination with gusto.
Mike is a man who has everything at his disposal. An extremely successful business man, he has money to burn but Mike’s life changes the day he receives the dreadful news that he has a terminal and genetically inherited disease. All the money in the world cannot cure him but what it can do is help him to look for the children he knows are out there somewhere carrying his DNA. He hopes to be given the opportunity to prepare them for their future by sharing his knowledge of this potentially life-threatening illness with them and also, by sharing some of his own personal wealth. But, as soon as Mike starts his search for these children, now adults, he discovers that someone is always one step ahead of him. People are vanishing without a trace and Mike is confused as to why. Has he angered someone through his business or personal dealings? Is this some sort of twisted revenge? Mike intends to find out. The more anxious and agitated Mike gets, the more his symptoms are aggravated, which hampers his progress. With a couple of good people by his side, Mike slowly begins to uncover something very sinister but, as the tentacles seem to be spread very far and very high up the political and social ladder, who can he now trust?
There is a very malevolent and sleazy character in this story who you can’t but compare to someone in the media in recent times. This individual will stoop to the lowest level to achieve a hold over politicians, royalty, celebrities, business tycoons and many other strata of society. To the world he is philanthropic, a friend, a generous man but he is living behind a false veneer and has many in the media fooled. For reasons that eventually become clear, Mike gets caught up in this man’s world and his dirty activities, and a cat and mouse game begins.
Find You First is packed full with twists and turns, and a few red herrings, to keep the reader on their toes. As Mike races across America to unravel this complex situation he finds himself in, he begins to realise the important things in life. He has an epiphany of sorts as he looks into his soul, understanding the loneliness of his life to date. Mike is a man on a mission and nothing will stop him achieving his goal….nothing!
Find You First is a race against time and really grabs the attention. One does have to completely park reality and let the imagination be stretched quite widely. My advice is to just embrace this book for what it is. It’s a roller-coaster, fast-paced, no questions asked, action-packed thriller. It’s pure escapism, pure entertainment, something that many of us are looking for right now.

Great review Mai. I love Linwood Barclay’s books and have added this one to my wishlist. It seems a bit different than his last couple, but that only intrigues me more.
I’ve seen that some regular fans are not overly impressed with this one Carla but it certainly provided me with some much-needed escapism! Thank you!
I’m not good at parking reality in a corner, but I loved your review! xx
Meggy thank you! I’m not normally but I went with it this time…escapism was needed:)
